As Alphas transitioned online during the pandemic, Shawn’s heart for seeing people encounter Jesus was not discouraged. In an effort to find a place for his friend, who was an atheist but curious about Christianity, to ask questions about faith, Shawn became an online Alpha leader. He shared, “I didn’t have a clue what I was doing and it was the easiest thing in the world because I was facilitating discovery.” Shawn invited 20 friends, 8 who joined him online, and in the end 4 became Christians!
Shawn already knew about Alpha as he had attended one at his local church many years ago and when his business started to flourish, he chose to partner with Alpha knowing that tens of thousands of people will go through a discovery process and ask ‘why do I believe what I believe?’, ‘how does Jesus fit into this?’ and ‘Is this something that can change my life?’ just like his formerly atheistic friend.
“I like how this program is very comfortably allowing people to ask questions and discover for themselves why they believe what they believe.”
– Shawn, Alpha Online Leader
Because of generous friends like Shawn, together with other Alpha Partners, all donations during the Christmas season will be doubled with a $300,000 matching gift. That means your donation will go twice as far in helping ensure Alpha resources are free and accessible to churches and communities across the country!
Mary, an Alpha host from Montreal, shared the hope of Jesus with guests through an online Alpha. She saw firsthand how God has been working during the pandemic and how Alpha helped build a community for people to explore the Christian faith.
Since March 2020, we started training churches to run Alpha online. At that first online training, we had over 480 leaders attend and since that time 4,000 leaders have been trained, leading to over 2,000 online Alphas! Forest City Community Church in London, ON is just one of these church communities impacted by running Alpha online.
Churches are equipping their communities to run Alpha in small groups for their friends, family and neighbours. This strategy is helping create new and multiplying small groups, and making disciples who make disciples. Watch the Village Church story to see how Alpha in small groups is making an impact.
